Little old, but I haven't seen anyone recommend a used D70 yet. I picked a near mint one up off ebay for $520 shipped with the kit lens, battery, memory card, charger, etc. Like Barry, I've got big hands, and thus avoided the Rebels and D40/50. The D70 has a nice substantial feel to it, and has enough features that most users won't find a need to upgrade. Regardless of what you get, I suggest one of the big 2 (nikon / canon) or at least get something that uses the same lens mounts so you can take advantage of the huge glass selection for nikon/canon. The best advice I ever got w/ regards to dslr selection is this: Just about any one will be capable of taking damn fine pictures. It's the person using the camera that will make the difference. Go to a camera shop, and play around with different ones. Make your decision mostly based on comfort, ease of adjustment, etc.
